Causes of birth defects

Birth defects can also be genetic in nature. These defective genes may come from both or either of the parents. When the defective genes pass from one of the parents, it is called dominant inheritance. If the faulty gene is inherrited from both the parents then it is commonly called recessive genes.
Types of birth defects
The question which obviously arises in the mind of all is that whether these birth defects can cause severe problems. Some of the defects can be cured if proper treatment is done immediately after birth. Infact sometimes these treatment can be carried out before birth also. But if such defects are neglected or there is risk then the defective individual may not get cured.
Some of the common birth defects are cleft lip or palate, spina bifida and anecephaly. A child may become visually handicapped or hearing impaired. Learing disability and slow learning are two other defects that are quite common. Many children are born with defects in their heart like atrial or ventricular septal defects, patent ductus arteriosus, coarctation of aorta, aortic or pulmonary valve stenosis and tetralogy of fallot. Gastrointestinal defects, sickel cell anaemia, down syndrome and other chromosomal abnormalities are evident in new born babies.
