Ambulance forms an integral part of the medical world or the medical fraternity. The car with a red cross carrying patients to and from hospitals and clinics has become a pretty common picture in almost everywhere in the world. Moreover, the importance of Ambulance lies ion the fact that it is considered to be one of the most important Emergency Medical Transportation. Ambulance is a vehicle that transports sick or injured human beings from one place of treatment to another place of treatment and also from the place of injury to the hospital or any kind of medical clinic. The term ambulance generally refers to a vehicle carrying medical aid to the patient outside a hospital and when needed to carry the patient to the hospital for follow up treatment and medical care. In certain places an ambulance is modified to carry a medical crew to the place of accidents or at the sick patient's home, whereas there is another one that is to transport the patient, if the need arises. The former is known as the ?fast responder? while the second one is the patient carrying ambulance.
The origin of the word can be traced back to the Latin word ?ambulare?, which meant- to move about or walk. This was related to the way patients were wheeled or carried in earlier days, before the use of vehicles. The term is now being generally associated with the car or motor that provides emergency services to sick or injured people. These vehicles are called emergency ambulances and are fitted with emergency lights and sirens to make their movement in the traffic more facilitating and easy. Whenever an ambulance passes, flashing its lights and making use of the siren, other vehicles make way for it to pass and reach its destination in quick time. The lights are known as warning lights. The Star of Life is the symbol that ambulances use and the sign denotes pre-hospital care's six stages. Other than the emergency ambulance, there is the patient transport ambulance. Generally, in this type of ambulance, the life support system is not there and the medical crew are less qualified than those of emergency ambulance. The main function of this type of ambulance is to transfer patients from one place of treatment to another and in many states, it is not furnished with siren and flash lights.
