Childbirth

Childbirth is one of the most magical moments a mother can experience in her lifetime. It is the culmination of pregnancy with the delivery of a newborn baby through a woman's uterus. There are three crucial stages of labor involved in the entire process of childbirth. Contractions start in the first stage of labor when the cervix gradually opens, or dilates, approximately 4 inches apart. In the beginning though, the contractions might be irregular and sporadic. In the first stage the cervix also become thinner and this process is known as effacement. The second stage of labor starts when the cervix is completely dilated. This stage of labor is also called the pushing stage. In the third and final stage the placenta separates from the uterine wall and is discharged through the birth canal. All through the period of labor, both mother and babies have to be kept under close observation.

Childbirth can take place in either the natural way or through surgery if any complications arise. Women who are healthy enough usually give birth in the normal way, which means that the baby is delivered through birth canal without any surgery.

However if there are any complications during childbirth, cesarean delivery might be suggested by doctors. Cesarean delivery includes surgery whereby the baby is taken out through the abdomen of the mother. There are an increasing number of child deliveries taking place in the caesarian section. About one in four women in the United States of America have caesarian babies. Unexpected problems during delivery such as poor health of the mother, position of baby, or not enough space for baby to pass through the vagina are the major reason for having a caesarean baby.

Childbirth is associated with a number of risk factors for both baby and the mother, therefore close monitoring is very important. Some of the common child birth risks include heavy bleeding during and after delivery, non progression of labor, fetal distress, non-progression of expulsions and several other complications. Women have to take care of their health and be strong enough if they want to have a natural childbirth. Regular exercises and an active lifestyle are crucial to a natural delivery. Also late pregnancies may causes complications in normal childbirth. Another kind of delivery is known as the unassisted childbirth where the baby is born without the assistance of any professional medical help.
